Laboratory MEMBERS

Dr. Smith has an MS in Biology and a PhD in Ocean, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences. She was a postdoctoral fellow at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and the Marine Biological Laboratory and has over 15 years experience in the field of Astrobiology.

Solomiia has joined the Peerside Program as a Mentee with Dr. Smith and will study the cold seeps of the Gulf of Mexico. Solomiia is planning to enter the 3:2 Engineering Program with Colombia University.

Cyrus is a Peerside Mentee and will study symbiotic relationships in the cold seeps of the Gulf of Mexico and the coral reefs of Montserrat for his senior thesis.

Anna is a Peerside Mentee and will study the deep-sea animals present at the cold seeps of the Gulf of Mexico.

Harlan has received two Massachusetts Space Grant Consortium Fellowships to study the microbes that attach to minerals in Gorda Ridge hydrothermal vents.

Sarah has received two Massachusetts Space Grant Consortium Fellowships to study a new iron-oxidizing bacterium from a Hawaiian hydrothermal vent.

Tyler performed difficult bioinformatics analyses of microbial communities from hydrothermal vents.

Shaahi helped bring microbes back from the dead.
